As most of the mainstream media was meeting behind school sheds, sniggering as Act Minister Brooke Van Velden uttered the word ‘cunt’ in Parliament, adults around the country were continuing the struggle for pay equity in industries that have been traditionally under-valued, under-paid, and undertaken by women.
For many families, this would be the difference between a supermarket trolley with adequate food for a week… or having to go without.
Landlord Luxon has continually pontificated that he and his Party are for the “Kiwi Battlers”:
“I'm on the side of Kiwi battlers out there that are refixing their mortgages after interest rates are through the roof and need to find $700 extra a fortnight to pay for their mortgages. I've sat with families that have actually had to cancel swimming lessons for their kids because they can't afford the groceries. I've sat with families that are trying to digest a $50 increase in rents per week.” - Christoper ‘I’m wealthy & Sorted’ Luxon, Current PM, and Property Speculator
Then they scrapped 33 equal pay agreements. Under Urgency. In 36 hours. No debate. No regulatory impact assessment. And it was retrospective.
It was as authoritarian and contrary to good democratic process as this country has gotten in recent memory. (It could be argued covid lockdowns; border closures, and mandates came close - but that was to save thousands of lives, including anti-vaxxers and conspiracy cultists, whether they wanted to be saved or not.)
But New Zealanders being a stroppy bunch, we decided to take the message directly to Minister Nikki ‘Noboats’ Willis, to show that her unilateral decision to dump pay equity would not go without resistance.
On Friday 16 May, at 1pm, approximately 250 - 300 people gathered in Johnsonville, Wellington, outside Ms Willis’ electorate office. The office was closed. Lights that were normally on even when not staffed, were dark.
Except for Te Ao Māori News, media were nowhere to be seen. (Shoulda used the “C” word?)

Of all the messages, the one on the pink board should give Nikki ‘Noboats’ Willis sleepless nights. Cutting pay equity for her low-paid sisters - *meh*. Being tossed out in an election - *SHIVERS!*

A clear message to Landlord Luxon and ‘Noboats’ Willis, which they seem unable to comprehend…

The message for Landlord Luxon and his cronies should be crystal clear. Cutting women’s pay will cost National dearly in spent political capital.

CHOKING ON YOUR CORNFLAKES TIME
Quote of the Week, from Minister Nikki ‘Noboats’ Willis, announcing $500 million film subsidy boost…
“I persuaded him [David Seymour] in the same way that I presented the case to you, which is, how can we be a government for economic growth if we allow a major industry to die? That would be inconsistent.”
Peter Jackson, Hollywood, and shareholders will be very appreciative of the hand-out.
It’s just such a shame Ms Willis can’t afford those pay equity claims.
After all, governments have to make choices. Right, Ms Willis?
“Our Government’s strategy is to reduce the deficit over time, through a gradual programme of consolidation and careful spending choices.” - Nicola Willis, Minister of Finance, 29 April 2025
